How Can I Get a Prescription
for L-Tryptophan ?

For Best Results, Consult Your Nutritional Physician

  • If you are lucky enough to have a Nutritional M.D., they should have no problem writing the prescription.
  • If they don't know what to write, you might suggest they call the compounding pharmacy you want to use.
  • My Own Personal Prescription Label Prescribed by My Doctor Reads:
    • C-Tryptophan (L) 500 MG - Take One Capsule As Directed - RFX 12 - #200.
  • I pay around 45 to 50 cents per 500mg capsule - or around $50 for 100 capsules.

Getting a Prescription for Tryptophan
From Your Regular (Insurance) Doctor

Chances Are...

  • Your doctor won't be knowledgeable on the application of tryptophan or other nutrients.
  • Your doctor will be upset, offended, angered or afraid that you even asked because he/she thinks it's "illegal".
  • Your Insurance won't cover it.
  • Your doctor will probably flat out refuse.

Don't Be Mad At The Doctor

  • Stay Cool - maybe you can reason with him or her.
  • Explain that you would rather not have to go through the stress of getting a 2nd doctor.
  • Maybe ask what the specific reasons are for not wanting to give the prescription.
  • Maybe ask the doctor to research it so he/she can prescribe it for you and other patients.
  • Maybe offer to sign a waiver.
  • Don't burn your bridges behind you. Different doctors do different things & it's the way of the future to have more than one doctor. Just don't give up until you find the right doctor for this job.

Good Luck !

Quality and Purity

  • I have taken Tryptophan from many sources. The Tryptophan I am taking now seems to be the best ever (I am getting mine from Key Pharmacy). The quality does seem to matter a great deal -- some I have taken seemed completely ineffective.
    .
  • Tell your pharmacist and doctor that you are very concerned with safety and purity.
    .
  • You might ask your pharmacist to check with Key Pharmacy as to their source.
    .
  • In the past year and a half, I have taken 4 bottles of Tryptophan from IAS. It comes in smaller 250mg caps. I felt it was effective, I felt no unusual side effects, and I liked it a lot and will take it again.
    .
  • I am now almost finished with my first bottle from Bios.
    • This Tryptophan is sold for animals - horses, and perhaps dogs. But it is said to be of the highest pharmacuetical grade and quality.
    • Although it took me a while to get over being afraid to try it, I was in another state and saw it in the glass locked cabinet behind the cash register at a large vitamin store. They said that their customers liked it and no problems had been reported.
    • I wanted to try it for others who might otherwise not be able to get it from a doctor.
    • My dogs take some of the same antibiotics and heart medicines that people take. Not all medicines are interchangeble between animals !! But some are.
    • So - I've been taking it for about two months. So far so good :)
    • But I would still recommend finding a doctor who will prescribe it for you :)
